I'm sure you have all heard the news about the virus epidemic centered on Wuhan, China. What you probably haven't heard about is that during this time of human tragedy, there is a female leader like this:

王延轶, married her boss in 2012. Her husband was very successful careerwise (Chinese equivalent of an US senator). She was subsequently promoted to be the director of Wuhan Institute of Virology in 2018.

After the news of the outbreak of the virus was made public in the middle of January, the Wuhan Institute of Virology told the public that 双黄连 (a cheap Chinese cough syrup) is effective against this virus. This immediately caused panic buying of this cough syrup. However, Chinese CDC, US CDC, WHO, multiple hospitals treating patients and multiple research labs have since then came out saying there is no evidence whatsoever of this cough syrup being effective. So then people started asking, if this isn't effective then why would they recommend it? Wuhan Institute of Virology then said their evidence is: from the evening of 29th January to the morning of 30th January they have tested this cough syrup for half a day... ... Are you fucking kidding me?!

After the virus outbreak, China made a request for help to the USA to seek any drugs currently under development that might be effective against this virus. One of the drugs identified was Remdesivir. Gilead Sciences, the company that developed Remdesivir has in the interest of humanitarian relief offered to deliver this drug to China and reveal information about the drug's chemical composition and manufacturing process, and at least as of now Gilead is not seeking to patent Remdesivir. But you know who is trying to patent Remdisivir right now? Wuhan Institute of Virology has filed a patent for Remdesivir... ... You know this is real, because let's face it, this level of absurdity is beyond the limits of my imagination.

On 2nd of February the chancellor of Capital Medical University wrote a letter to her husband, in which he said [my translation]: "Your wife is unsuitable for the role of the director of the Wuhan Institute of Virology. 1) She is unqualified, her research field is microbiology, not virology. 2) She lacks the necessary skills, even when compared to others at the institute. 3) She is too young and does not have enough experiece." ... ... OK. That is one way of putting it.
