Taking a break from the shit-tests for a minute.

To start, this guide is geared more towards the younger guys in high school/college that don't know what they want to do career-wise. In 2015, I have friends who are my age (26) who still work at grocery chains, retail, etc with no plans to go anywhere. Here comes the mother of all excuses: "Well, I didn't go to college so..."

TL;DR: There's no fucking excuse.

Let's break this into a simple three-step process.

Step 1: You don't need to go to college.

Step 2: You just need skills. Ready, set, google.

Step 3: You have no excuse to not be/get what you want.

There's no economic shitstorm. Because you didn't go to college there's no debt. The entirety of human knowledge of the world is free and at your fingertips right now. So who's to blame?

B. My parents

C. Obama

D. YOU

I might have a story similar to yours (before TRP I hope). Lanky, unkempt, cystic-acne ridden SOB in high school. Too unassertive to do what I want (play sports/fuck girls) instead decide to go safe route and fuck around on computer, play video games, jerk off. High school flies by. Senior year comes. Mom: "You're going to college or you won't get a real job!" Go to state school. Graduate with graphic design degree.

Junior Graphic Designer: 35k.

I actually enjoy this job. Dicking around on the computer/photoshop all day. Making cool shit. But 35k? Really? One day I decide to break it down to what that is hourly: $12/hr. Running joke around our group is that we can make more mowing lawns. After a year and a half, I get really uncomfortable and decide, hey, I use to like making websites. I could definitely enjoy that and for sure make better money. Ask to make updates to company website, mess around at home and make my own portfolio site.

A couple weeks later I apply for a web developer job at some random company and after the first interview, I'm hired (with no experience and no work to show besides my portfolio website...of graphic work.) Said I knew a bunch of shit that I only kind of knew. Was confident I'd pick it up quick.

Web Designer & Developer: 45k.

My first few weeks I learn by doing. It's fucking crazy. So much google. So much stackoverflow. I learn so fucking much. I love it. However, this small company is batshit crazy. Dip the fuck out and look at real jobs in the city.

I put in my two weeks on a Monday. Land my next job that Thursday.

Web Developer: 65k

I've learned a shit ton at this job. Decide that I need to learn more and make more money. I see that they're not paying a standard salary for my position in a city. Bring my boss an offer from another company for 80k. They match and promote me.

(Now) Senior Web Developer: 80k

Obviously, I'm not killing it guys. But the point of my story is that I'm just a regular fucking shmuck. I'm really not that motivated, I'm not that smart, I'm not that networked (still working on that). The point is that you shouldn't get comfortable and you have no excuse to not strive for something better. When you're not learning/ranking, it's time to go. Job jumping isn't frowned upon when you're young. If they do ask just say you're first job isn't what you wanted but needed the experience, second job was a first step into a field I was more interested in, etc.

Some of you might be like, but hey, you went to college. That's why! Nope. I work with two guys with a practically identical work history that never did any more schooling after HS.

Go get what you want. Don't settle. If you want to be a doctor go get your PHD, but if you want to do anything that doesn't require a plaque on a wall, just read, watch, and learn.
