Title: Poor Richard’s Retirement: Retirement for Everyday Americans
Author: Aaron Clarey
Best book 📚 I bought. $7 (paper back) on Amazon.
Summary: Passages that caught my attention.
•Ch.1 (Pg. 19) 2015 Google Survey 62% of Adult Americans have less than $1,000 in their savings account and 21% have no savings at all.
•Ch.1 (Pg. 36) -Housing and transportation are people’s biggest expenses. (Solution: Buy only used cars to save costs. Buy cars that have high miles per gallon to save fuel costs.) -In 1955 the average house was 983 square feet. In 2019 that average is 2,700 square feet. (Meaning you don’t need a big house.)
•Overspending and not living in your means is the cause of most debt.
•Ch.1 (Pg.42) 99.8% of jobs suck and very few people get a job they enjoy. (Hobbies and family give enjoyment.)
•Avoid the rat race at all costs. (Stop impressing people.)
•Ch.2 (Pg.71) Materialism and vices are addiction and the only way to solve it is to detox. (Ex. drugs, alcohol, porn, gaming, gambling, etc.)
•Ch.2 (Pg.83) Pain is inevitable and can’t be avoided.
•Ch.3 (Pg.86-111) -Minimalism -Get rid of stuff you don’t need or use. -Eliminate all debts. -Never take on debt if it doesn’t make you money. -Pay cash for cars. (Only buy used.) -Don’t take on debts with people who have money problems. -Buy as much house as you need. -Steve Jobs Dead Principle (Spend more time with family than materialistic things.) -Entrepreneurship (Working for yourself and even after you retire gives purpose and minimizes stress.) -Save for retirement. (Don’t forget to invest and build assets.) -Never fully retire. (Retirement is death.)
Ch.3 (Pg.109) Everything eventually loses its value including retirement.
Ch.4 -Set up a budget. -Minimize expenses. -Eliminate debt. -Sad truth is most humans worthless. (Pg.125) -Good, quality, engaging people are rare. (Pg.129) -Death is inevitable. (Pg.130) -No matter how strong the bonds are everything eventually comes to an end. (Pg.131) -You must constantly be on the hunt for new and interesting people in your life. (Pg.133) -You’ll waste more time trying to keep people in your life than find new ones. (Pg.134)
This doesn’t cover all of it but I found a lot of great information in this book that I’m going to apply to my life moving forward.
Highly recommend every man read this book.
