The remote Gambier Islands are the southeasternmost islands in French Polynesia. The Gambier Islands are a group of 10 volcanic islands and 7 atolls all contained within the fourth largest lagoon in the world, altogether creating a unique self-sustained ecosystem. The isolated nature of the Gambiers yet the fact that each of the islands within the lagoon are within a short boat ride (<5 mins) of one another really gives a feeling of being at the end of the world or a micro-world on its own. Polynesian mythology tells of the main island Mangareva being lifted from the ocean floor by the demi-god Maui. The high mountains of Mangareva rise over the surrounding islands and the luminous lagoon like a great cathedral. Most of the islands are uninhabited and offer a pristine and preserved nature to explore.

French Polynesia is on my list! May parents went there on there Honeymoon on the late 60s so even the main islands were more like these outer atolls are today!
