Remember the ubiquitous trope of the young guy calling up a girl to ask her out, only to have her big scary tough-guy father answer the phone instead, with awkward hilarity ensuing?

I’ve never fully understood that trope.

The father is basically admitting that he did such a poor job of raising his daughter that she’s incapable of picking a date who isn’t going to immediately try to bang her and/or she is willing to spread her legs for any teenage boy who comes calling.

I always found that disrespectful. Fathers were insanely overprotective and just brutes in that respect. It’s one thing to set expectations... it’s another thing to purposely treat the boy your daughter is dating like trash in order to demoralize him.

Both the overbearing father and the nonexistent father represent an extreme and they’re bad. The only healthy way was one where a father mad a point to get to know the young man and made his presence felt in a respectful way and set expectations.

Give it a few more years and the trope will be non existent because fathers won't exist anymore.
