He joked that I’ll “empty out his wallet”
I’ll preface my story by saying that generosity in a man is a non-negotiable for me. And although my boyfriend has been generous in the past, now he jokingly brings money up with a touch of resentment.
For example, I mentioned I was excited about a trip we are planning and he jokes “yayyy you’ll empty out my wallet”. Now this trip was mostly his idea, I let him take the lead on planning and told him I would be fine taking the subway too if that ends up being easiest.
I don’t want him to feel that I’m using him in any way, but for now I just can’t contribute in the same financial capacity to the relationship as he can (with me being a student). With that being said, I do buy dinners and special treats for him as often as I can.
I understand that this may well just be a joke, but I also don’t want to establish that it’s okay for me be shamed or thought of as less than for expecting generosity.
Any advice?
