Actually, there was a study done (female researcher, got her a PhD and was later made into a book - there are 2 book reviews in this PDF) which proved that women can only last 4 years in a relationship.

Of course, this number isn't set in stone - a child will typically increase the duration of the relationship out until the child becomes independent at 2, 3 or 4 (speaking, able to pour milk and cereal, whatever).

Think of a bell chart. 4 years is the 90%. Also, there are always exceptions to the rule.
