Women are only have the story.

Women are the gatekeepers of sex, but men are the gatekeepers of marriage.

Men are refusing enmasse to marry because they would be literally worked to death due to financial, social, cultural, and familial obligations. The alternative is to become a Freeter, NEET, or to work an easy part time job that pays just enough for housing, food, and hobbies while refusing every promotion to avoid increased workload.

Long story short is that Men have a choice: work to death, or live a relatively pleasant life. I think you can guess what men would rather choose.

This work, family life balance is a fictional construct and the price of chasing this failure is sub replacement fertility. A declining populations comes with a price and that is replacement thus far almost all western style societies are below replacement and all of them play this game. Any cultural group that successfully replaces itself eg Islam, Jews, Mormons and the Amish will grow. The reason why is because they are all varying degree's of patriarchy and they all reject this matriarchal balancing game Japan is playing.

They have two choices end gynocentric matriarchy and adopt a soft patriarchy thus holding a stable population. Or continue with the status quo and continue the balancing game and be eliminated by a much more energetic soft patriarchy by simple bloodless replacement. This is a life and death choice Japan is going to have to make, stand up to their women or simply die. Because in the end the social status quo is a complete failure in need of desperate and total reform or abolition.

What happened to Japan?

A few decades ago it seemed like the whole world was in awe / afraid of them and they were making great strides in technology...the future looked Japanese (and many fiction writers imagined it that way)

And it all seems to have petered out. What happened?
