These 3 books really hit hard for me. Of course 1984 is on there but i would recommend Road to Wiggan Pier instead as 1984 now seems old fasioned with big facebook.

Oswald Spengler - 'Decline of the West' wherein the author discusses the idea that history is non-linear and evolution in human culture is not neccesarily positive, what the different civilizations were and how we can categorize them. He also talks about the life cycles of those civilizations.

I recommend reading into the sphere of Informal and Formal logic. For an introduction in Informal logic Id recommend 'Introduction to Logic' by Harry Gensler. For formal logic 'A Modern Formal Logic Primer' by Paul Teller. Logic itself can give you another look at how the world around you loves not to base its claims on good arguments. Rougly speaking, the difference between Formal and Informal Logics is that the first discusses the form that the arguments take while the other discusses the actual contents of the arguments.

Id also add the works of Julius Evola which, for me, is a great source of inspiration for individualists even if you dont agree with his ideas (which are quite strange btw).

As you can see, the works I recommended cannot be placed in the right-left dichotomy whether we use the economic or the cultural meaning. I doubt that you will manage to form an independent opinion about yourself using this dichotomy for several reasons - reality is too complex for the simple left-right way of thinking and the whole left-right have accumulated too much excess meanings throughout the world so finding clear sources is hard. Just try to stay away (by that I mean dont enter the 'fanboy' mode) from current popular trends in politics and ideologies as most of them are just bad.

Of course, reading authors which are covered in Political Science courses in common universities is also a great thing to do. Unfortunately, some of the authors there are really hard to understand (like Hegel, Kant) while others might be more enjoyable to read (like Marx). Contemporary Philosophy is also a great way to start but it is damn hard to understand anything as it needs good preparation.
