No one really has the right to make you do anything. You are obligated to do the work required of you, it's your choice to say yes or no to anything extra. Make a compromise, on days you can't go for whatever your reasons are, don't. If you think you can help or are available, if it will help your career, go and show that you are reliable. Also, negotiate for more pay because no one works for free. Good luck!

You can say whatever or makeup whatever you want. Outside life should be irrelevant anyway, everyone should be paid based soley on production. That said if you think you can move up and your extra work will actually be rewarded it might be worth doing. If you think its more likely they'll fuck you over, I'd just start planning to find a different job. (and refuse to do the extra work now)

Your idea is smart. Absolutely make up a story such as having to look after elderly relatives. It's a skillful strategem, sort of like telling female coworkers you're engaged to be married. It should go a long way to take off the heat. He's using that tactic on you, and he thinks you're not smart enough to do the same.

Anyone who plays strictly by the rules in this world gets eaten alive. Only a simpleton always blurts out the blunt truth.
