EDIT: BTW, just as a side note, see how this is one form of "fake news" (propaganda).

A publisher puts out a book, fires up the PR engine, has the book author (or a ghost-writer for them) write up one or more "puff piece" articles for various "news"papers/"news" magazines (i.e. the WaPo piece) which may be published in any of a number of ways by the media entity (i.e. as a "news" item, an "opinion" piece, possibly even being a PAID/"sponsored" article [i.e. the book publisher buys "ads"]).

Alternately, the "news" entity -- newspaper, radio, TV show [or whatever] -- does an "interview" with the author -- generally speaking this is a formulaic "faux-conversation" that follows one of a handful of standard "recipes" -- it's quite often doubly fake in that it invariably includes a fraudulent Q&A interplay wherein not only are the author's "answers" pre-scripted, but so are the interviewer's "questions" & comments (that is, pre-formulated "questions" are provided by the author/publisher -- at least in a hint-hint, nudge-nudge, wink-wink manner -- to the "interviewer" {who can then create the perception that THEY have read the book, or studied the subject/issue, without having to bother actually doing anything of the kind}).

Invariably, the ideal goal is to create "buzz" around the book -- and the "issue" -- as well as push-promote the books' (and author's/publisher's) particular "slant" on it. To that end various pseudo-controversial things around the book/author & the "issue" (either at & immediately after, or even as a "build up" sightly prior to the book being published).

The common (and commonly erroneous) conclusion of most people is that the book just coincidentally happens to be a "timely" commentary on a trending controversial subject -- that CAN be true, but just as often (arguably more often, though not always successfully so) it's the other way around: the "controversy" was/is contrived (even "created") as a means of promoting the book itself, as well as PUSHING the author and/or a certain particular "spin" on the issue to the forefront.
