Agreed, steer clear. You'll be inundated with all kinds of people-related headaches, plus you're immediately starting to put yourself on the block, because when push comes to shove at any company, they can always use more hands-on staff and fewer managers

When you're a worker you have all your problems but when you're the boss you have everyone's problems. I spent over 20 years not getting to take all my vacation because I made sure everyone else was able to take theirs. I covered Thanksgiving and Christmas so others could enjoy time with family. I must have been doing something right because no one quit in 8 years. But, a company get survive with fewer managers, but if they cut technical staff, things start falling through the cracks. Keep your technical skills current and as broad as you can. That's my recommendation.

Also, once you hit 40, your upward movement in IT management is very limited. Technical types can work until they retire, as long as they keep their skills up.

Some good advice here. Let me add:

What type of IT work do you do? There is room for advancement, but it requires specialized skills. Coding/programming the big one, networing tends to be fairly steady and pays well, especially if you are a network engineer.

Management is one way to advance (make more money) but it comes with a bunch of headaches. It depends on the kind of hassle you want day to day.

I'm at a similar career crossroads myself and had the same conversation. For now, I am considering my alternatives but I'm leaning towards networking because I hate coding and am awful at it to boot.

It really depends on the company. Best to have a frank talk with some managers if possible. Where I work now, managers have to log in and work some part of every day, even when on vacation. Most average 60 hours a week and have told me the money isn't worth it.

Depends on the place, though - at my last coding job, managers did next to nothing and the workers did 100 hour weeks all the time. Most, including me, left from burnout.

Management can be a trap. You can end up stuck in a job where you're supposed to "manage" people and aren't given the tools to do so.

You're expected to produce results, dependent on people you have little or no control over or say in who they are.

I mean, you do you, but managers aren't needed. They are just a firewall between employees and executives.

If that's the direction you want to go, there's nothing wrong with that if your goal is to go to the top, but there's no guarantees.

I preferred to avoid that route, and just became an expert in my field. As such, I had much more power where I was, without having to deal with management bullshit like time sheets and that kind of nonsense, but that's me. I like job portability.

Managers get easily stuck, because promoting from within is fine, since they know the company, but bringing in outside people to "manage" mean you're much more dependent on your social networks.
