I’d love to disagree and say: nah the traditional culture will stave off the crazies. But no. Seeing this already in SE Asia. I was having a coffee earlier, I’m in Thailand, and sat next to me were a couple. Western male, Thai girl. She was on her phone constantly. He tried to engage but gave up. Until he talked about money. That got her attention. He was a desperately sad guy who realising money got her attention proceeded to talk about what he could buy for her. Her disinterest in him as a person was palpable. His realisation that money was key didn’t make him understand that was all he was to her. Rather he saw that as how to ‘win’ her.
