Dating 4 years, and are getting engaged soon. The ring is already picked out and everything. My girlfriend has always idolized the way her grandparents got engaged. Her grandfather proposed and her grandmother was ready to say no, but asked him to tell her why she should say yes. So while down on one knee he listed out all the reasons in front of all their friends (they were at a party) and she was convinced and said yes and they lived happily ever after. Or so the story goes.

I've heard this story, I know my girlfriend thinks it's just the most romantic thing of all time, I never gave it much more thought. Until she said she wants us to "reenact" the scenario when I propose. Basically, a public proposal. I get down on one knee and ask her to marry me. She asks why should she. I tell her. She says yes.

My knee-jerk reaction was to say no, absolutely not. For one, I think it's super weird to basically act out a skit during our proposal. But mostly I think it's utterly humiliating for me. I love my girlfriend, I am more than happy to ask her to marry me. Ask. Not beg.

My girlfriend says she's been dreaming of a proposal like this since she was a little kid and it would mean the world to her. I know she's a romantic, but I think this is too much. It's degrading to me.

I don't know what to do. I want to enjoy our proposal as well, but I want her to be happy. Am I overthinking this? Is it not as bad as I think it is?

TL;DR: My girlfriend wants me to beg her to marry her in front of all our friends and family. I refuse. Am I wrong?

We should tell him that if she says no he should respect her decision, not argue or discuss the point but leave at once and go and buy a big motorbike with the ring money. Or a boat. Or something, anything that isn't a ring or for her.
