It's more subtle than that, I'm afraid. She could very well be in complete earnest in believing that she will keep her promises. But, and this is the critical thing, the old expression "it's a woman's prerogative to change her mind" is still implicitly considered valid. That is why women breaking promises or oaths is never seen as a big deal, or not much of one, to a wider audience.

Scenario 1: I don a radiation suit. I walk into a former nuclear plant after it has melted down. I take pictures. I feel weak so I rest. I fall unconscious and die. My spouse gets the hazard pay and life insurance. My family is grateful for my sacrifice. I am forgotten.

Scenario 2: I sign a bulletproof prenup and have notarized every financial document showing that my money and hers are separate estates. We tie the knot and enjoy the honeymoon bliss. My biz explodes as I work 80 hours a week, sacrificing self for my family. She stays at home with the kids, doing what a $40k/yr live-in nanny could do. 25 years later, I am worth billions, my kids and wife have the best of everything, and our desire to help family and friends is fully realized. The 401k, the emergency fund, the paid-off houses, the college funds, the cash reserve, all toys paid for. I am set. I am served with divorce papers while working. Totally caught off guard. I did everything right, so how could this happen to ME? The biz suffers and my net worth is down to $5B by the end of all the court proceedings. Family court awards her the kids, the biz (valued at $25B instead of the $5B, due to imputed income, so I have to come up with another $20B that no longer exists), all personal property and real estate plus alimony and child support totaling 50% of my future net income. I have legal right to see my kids but get squeezed out from visitation by the ex, if I fail to buy the kids new clothes for each visit or do not kiss her ass in general. Soon, I cannot see my kids and I have no benefit at all from my ex. I am paying half my future income (again IMPUTED on what the ex said I SHOULD be able to earn) for zero benefit, and my assets were pissed away by the ex. She is under no requirement to show what she does with any of my assets, child support or alimony. As long as I serve as a perpetual ATM machine, I am all but forgotten. As long as the court sees green in my account, I stay out of jail and keep my drivers' license. I receive no gratitude or validation of self-worth, and slide into the abyss of depression until I die, broke, alone and maybe a hundred pounds.

Analysis: Both scenarios were sacrificial. Scenario 1 ended with a celebration of my life and efforts. Scenario 2 ended with a sentence to debtor's prison from which there is no escape.
