Check if hostels in the city will give you a place to stay in exchange for work ( I've heard there is one in Venice beach that does this) Check Craigslist for both jobs and rooms for rent, and in a city like that be ready to work like 10 hours a day just to barely scrape by.

For college LA is great. Even for visiting and seeing the sights. Other than that it’s so damn expensive it’s not even funny. Tent cities abound and people are shitting in the streets like they do in Tijuana.

I drive back and forth from sea to shining sea a lot, and when you go through the California border control check point I always like to queue up the anthem of the Soviet Union.

LA isn’t 100% horrible, but it highly depends where you plan on living and how much money you’re willing to spend. West Hollywood? Stay in Orange County? Venice? Huntington? Maybe flip over to Pasadena or Burbank? Beverly Hills?

It very much depends what you can afford and what your intentions are.
