Ways around my fellow men to deal with this.

Don't spend more than $20 on a date.
Make the first date starbucks or a coffee shop, then make 2nd date her house for dinner. Go to trader joes or a cheap restaurant, buy a can/jar of spaghetti sauce and a box of spaghetti noodles and make dinner for her. If she kicks you out right after dinner, you know you're a foodie call.
If going to a restaurant, eat at home before you go to the restaurant and only order a small dinner side salad. If she care in any way about you, she'll order something small also. If she doesn't care, she'll order the most expensive thing and you'll know you are a foodiecall.
Once you found out you are foodiecall, excuse yourself by saying you need to go to the restroom, pay for your part of the meal with the manager, and walk out, let her pay for her own food. You have undone the foodie call.

Been telling women that I'm doing a multi-day fast and that they are welcome to engage in a conversation about chess and philosophy at a local bookstore, versus the "pay for my food" request.

It's sorted out both the ones looking for freebies as well as the ones not capable of playing chess or reading.
