It is a holdover from when a single mother existed because a man had died, in the coal mine, at sea, at war. It wasn't the mother that deserved the allowance, it was the children (the future) that needed nurturing for the culture's continuation.

I was raised by one of the early round of modern single mothers way back in the early 70's. My grandfather on my mothers side hated what I represented and there was never any question that the old man seriously disliked me. My classmates derided me, the teachers and parents of the other children either pitied me or ignored me.

I suppose it's better that the children of today's single mothers are no longer so openly vilified.

I've taken grief for refusing to date single mothers. Everyone always assumes it's because I think they're damaged goods. But that's not it at all. I just remember how much I hated the parade of guys my mother brought home. I never knew if the guy was going to try to be nice to me to get in better with my mother or if he was going to beat the shit out of me when she wasn't around.

I know one women that deliberately decided to become a single mother. She's stated that she isn't going to stop dating just because she's got a kid to raise. It breaks my heart because I know what the kid is in for and she doesn't give two shits about the damage she's inflicting.

I'm very curious to hear what you think the bastards deserve?
