It just happens that for the majority, their "own way" is whatever the guy next to them is doing.
It's incredibly easy to conclude that society, or culture, or [insert collectivist term here] actually exists, but it doesn't. It's an abstract concept, granted a valuable one, but not a real thing in the real world. You cannot touch society, you cannot speak to society, it's nothing more than an idea in your head. This abstract concept is leveraged to get you to conform to other people's path, instead of your own.
Civilization only exists because enough people decided their own path includes it's existence. If enough people follow a path that doesn't include civilization, it will disappear. For example, if the unproductive classes overwhelm the productive with their dependency, the productive will just GTOW, this is largely the lesson of Atlas Shrugged. A lot of what MGTOW men are doing is just shrugging off other's paths.
I'm not saying go be a hermit in the woods, I'm saying that whatever path you choose, make sure YOU chose it. Because in the end, all of the human experience is just one class of people who choose, and another class of people who unconsciously follow. If you don't choose for yourself, then by default you are following someone else's choice.
