Their life purpose is the same as ours: control. Men seek control and power through overt physical means with the world around them. Women seek it through covert means with the people around them. She will demand all her children and grandchildren communicate with her constantly so she can use guilt and withholding approval to control what they do, say, think, etc. Anyone who dares to withhold information or defy her will immediately become the black sheep of the family and have their social safety net torn away until they get back on granny's plantation.

There isn't a purpose. Old women aren't women...they are simply old little girls.

They waste the resources they've accumulated throughout a lifetime...most likely procured from a man they've manipulated and nagged.

If you're asking really, there are some interesting evolutionary studies into the purpose of menopause. It's the "grandmother hypothesis " . Orcas are the main study, but has application in human evolution. Orca as a species are matriarchal, in that both sons and daughters stay forever within the maternal pod. When orcas mate, they do not form a new family group. Orcas, like humans, experience menopause. Orca pods without a maternal leader fare much worse in terms of hunting and survival. The idea being that the wisdom and young rearing assistance provided by a grandmother are critical for survival of species with complex social structures.

Similar studies on the influence of a mother on a son's mating success were done in chimps (or bonobos?)

As for your own elderly woman's saltiness, I suspect it's because she feels like she's lost her influence.

Old people have see it all, watching two generations grow up gives a lot of wisdom. That being said bitter people do exist. Old or young doesn’t matter. They can’t be changed to become happy. If you try, they’ll only resent you thinking “They feel I’m a burden..They don’t love me.” or something along the same lines. Let them be.

Watch The Sopranos season 1. You’ll get some idea.
