How did you know it was crap if you didn't read it!?

I did, however I never understood the success this book received. It is basically a Harlequin novel on steroids. For a man the plot doesn't seem to go anywhere. Anything and everything that happens in the book is in there because it serves a function to develop the relationship between the two main characters.

Men tend to like books where "the relationship" (=love, friendship, comradery etc.) is formed and consequently used to accomplish a certain goal (=the main plot). Be it winning a battle, killing a whale, making a scientific discovery or dropping a ring into a volcano. For women "the relationship" by itself seems to be their holy grail. The rest is just background noise used to push the relationship forward.

But even from that point of view and having some experience with fantasy novels I had several moment where my suspension of disbelief just fell apart.

The "man" (=Christian) in 50 grades has some severe issues.

"His biological mother, Ella, was addicted to drugs and worked as a prostitute. Her pimp was extremely abusive to both her and Christian, often beating Cristian with a belt, hitting and kicking him, or putting out his cigarettes on his skin, leaving terrible scars and burn marks. When he was four years old, his mother overdosed and died; he was alone with her corpse for four days before they were discovered by police."

"In the second movie of the trilogy, Fifty Shades Darker, it is revealed that the women who Christian begins a BDSM relationship with must look like his mother. When explaining this, he refers to himself as a sadist, rather than a Dominant due to the fact that he likes to inflict pain on women who look like his mother as a way to cope with his past."

.....yeah, sure sounds like the perfect guy you want to have a relationship with!

But because he is handsome and a successful businessman his past and the consequence it has on his current behaviour is regarded as "intense and exciting". Like women he is a "victim". But for any other guy it would be seen as "creepy and dangerous" and women would report his ass to the police if the guy even looked in their direction let alone if he invited them to become his sexual slave.

For all the plot holes and strange character development these books did open my eyes further to the female psyche. If you scrape away all the "BS" this is what women "en masse" crave and desire. A man from the top of the social ladder with many talents (playing the piano, sailing a boat, flying a helicopter, running a world improving high tech company) that will take them away from their run-of-the-mill lives, use them as his sex toys in all kind of kinky ways while they try to crack the code to his personality so they can "fix him" and access his "soft and caring side" so he won't toss them away when he is done using them.

and to answer your question: yes, she does "crack his code". There is a wedding and a baby. So far, so good for this bluepilled fairytale……...

"We" could write the sequel though were after having a couple of kids she gets bored because he is working to improve the world too much and the "publishing work" she is doing is no longer fulfilling. The sex (=after kinky BDSM) also feels lacklustre to her so she hires an expert to make her "feel" something again. She ends up sleeping with him. Christian finds out and threatens to kill the guy...she explains why she did it and although he is still furious he tries to forgive her and even apologies to her and promises to make things better and for a while the spark is back in their marriage.... but after a while it starts to fade again. She repeats the previous trick of adultery and to weaken her sense of guilt she tries and gets hooked on drugs. It takes a while but Christian finds out when he finds his wife passed out in their marriage bed covered in male fluids. This time she pushed him too far and his trust in her that she so carefully built up in the original trilogy is gone. He wakes her, hits her and calls her "a crack-whore" just like his mother. After being treated in a rehab where Christian refuses to see her she files for a divorce on the count of domestic violence. She gets the kids and to accommodate for her lifestyle he has to sell a part of his company. On the job his focus starts lacking and his company eventually goes bankrupt. However the reminders for child support and alimony payments keep pouring in. He tries to appeal to her sense of reason since she found a new suitor. She refuses and demands full payment. Christian looking at a possible jail sentence goes apeshit.....since it is christmas I will leave out the possible macaber ending to make the books go full circle.
