I know a few Thai guys that chose to literally go monk for a year or two. It's totally up to them when they enter the temple and when they leave. It's socially acceptable and some employers will let you leave and rejoin the company after you completed your personal journey. One american I met was going monk with them. They treated him just the same as any other. He stayed for 6 months. I'm seriously considering this after I retire.
