I carried around a journal everywhere. Whenever somebody started talking to me, or disrupting me, or asked me a question, or came around when they weren't supposed to come around, I immediately went to the book and wrote a note. Whenever I saw something that was inappropriate, I made a note. Whenever I was asked "what's that, and what did you write down?" I said "nothing really."

When they see me reach for the book each time, and write something down, they tend to get the hint. Because people fear records, especially records that they don't know about and can't control.

It depends, you can talk about the mundane shit like the weather, which sportsball team won the world corporate championship, orange man is probably bad, etc etc. Keep the chatter NPC and bland.

If you come off as somebody work obsessed with a prickly demeanor most people will avoid small talk and only come to you with work related conversation. Just don’t engage in conversation that has nothing to do with work people will naturally avoid you. I’ve worked with some of the same contractors for 2 years and I don’t even know there names and nor they mine. Just a good morning in the morning and a take it easy when they leave

Well, you'd be rude. You don't want to be "the rude guy" you don't want people to sabotage you. Just play dumb, avoid the conversation, just say that you're not interested, maybe even hint that you're "asexual", do play up your excitement for your hobbies, tell them all about it, invite them to your hobby meets...

I do not bother with small talk at work, I can fake a smile but my abruptness would get me into trouble. Personal preference ofc.

No, you can't tell people you dont' have personal conversations at work. It's considered rude as hell.

Just do it without announcing it, and have a stock list of boring answers for what your plans are or what you did last weekend.
