Rudolph cannot be a male because male reindeer shed their antlers around mid-December. Female reindeer are the ones that still have them at Christmas.

Except isn’t the whole point of this story to represent that no matter an individuals differences they are just like everyone else, and rudolf happened to have a magical red nose that helped santa deliver presents. Far as I’m concerned he was more useful than any of the other raindeer were.
