All the women that think he's the asshole... That doesn't surprise me at all. Here's why:

For women there are no consequences.

The dude explains how he decided not to risk himself because he had other family that needed him. A woman thinks "just stand up for her!" and a man thinks "if I say anything how will this escalate? Does this guy have more muscle than me? Is his punching reach longer? Does he have any weapons I might not see right now? How good a fighter am I? Is he drunk or otherwise stimulated?"

All that adds up the an estimation of the CONSEQUENCES of doing anything.
