Inheritance is not considered marital property in Ohio, so the only way for it to become part of your community property would be to commingle it in some way. That would, in theory, include renovations on a home or paying off a mortgage.

This is probably THE primary driver/reason why women want to "upgrade/upscale" the family house. (Particularly when it is some mid-life marriage where the hubby already OWNED the home prior to the wedding; or where he "inherited" some family property.)

The "new" house -- including whatever money went into it* -- is generally seen as "marital property." (Even more so in "marital property" states that don't have the explicit statutory provisions that Ohio apparently does {and personally I wouldn't rely on that anyway; the "law" as interpreted by the courts & judges is a LOT more "fungible" and even "arbitrary" than most people imagine}.)

* Pretty much regardless of where the money came from -- the "source" of the money gets obfuscated (co-mingled) via the sale of the prior home, the various machinations & financial shenanigans of paying off and taking on new mortgages (all of the signatures involved, etc).
