One of my first jobs was in construction, here in Europe it pays well and there is the possibility of upward movement if you build your own team.

I would imagine that in the States you'd have even more opportunity.

Don't blame you shortcomings on you being a son of a single mother.. Its easy giving blame to things out of your control instead of assuming responsability
