A commonly talked about idea on the internet is hypergamy or the 80/20 Rule. The idea is the top 20% of men attract 80% of women. The Rational Male talks about it here: https://therationalmale.com/2016/02/23/the-pareto-principle/

Studies of mate selection in dozens of countries around the world have found men and women report prioritizing different traits when it comes to choosing a mate, with men tending to prefer women who are young and attractive and women tending to prefer men who are rich, well-educated, ambitious, and attractive.

Whether this is true or not is controversial to some, but for this post, let's assume it is true. It sounds highly competitive at first, but the bar is low.

Let's assume you're American:

  • To reach the top 20% of US personal earners, you need to earn $65,000 to $67,499. Source
  • More than two-thirds of Americans are overweight (32.5%) or obese (36.5%), so to be neither obese or overweight puts you in the top 31%. Source
  • About 80% of U.S. adults and children don't get enough exercise, so exercising enough alone puts you in the top 20%. Source
  • 36.0% of Americans 25 or older have a bachelor's degree or higher. It isn't 20%, but having a degree means you're more educated than 64% of Americans. Source
  • Nearly 70% of Americans have under $1,000 in savings. If you have $5,000 saved, you are in the top 20% of Americans in personal savings. Source

None of this sounds out of reach or highly competitive. Being in the top 20% of men sounds hard from when you hear it, but when you break it down the bar is low.
