It means 2 months rent upfront plus a security deposit typically equal to 1 months rent.

So if you lease a $1,500 place, they will want up to $4,500.

I have rented for many years, and have rarely received my deposit back fyi.

Take a very detailed video of the apartment when you move in, and then download it from your phone to your computer so you have two copies.

This will protect you in case the landlord later claims you damaged the place, and you can produce the video proving what each room looked like.

In many places (USA) there are laws mandating that landlords must pay you interest on your security deposit, and they have to give it back within a few weeks of your leaving.

Try to get a rental with a month to month lease, so you aren't tied down for a whole year, in case something happens.

Before you rent, knock on the doors of apartments near yours, to see what kind of people they are. Go visit on Friday & Saturday nights to see if there are loud parties, drug dealing, etc.

Do your homework, read the lease agreement carefully.

You'll most likely be charge a prorated rent for the amount of days left in the month. This means you pay for the days you'll be living there in the first month.

Security deposit is somthing they ask for to make sure it covers any damages you might cause. You will most likely get this back if you dont mess anything up

Check online for reviews of the complex and landlord. Check the place out on a weekend night, a weekday night and during the day.

Is it in the same ball park for a mortgage? If so, never rent. You're just being a cuck for a landlord. It's not harsh, but it is a fact. You'll be paying someone elses responsibility.

Check into your local rental laws. (They vary significantly, and landlords will often try to get away with things they technically aren't entitled to... most people are unaware and just go along; often because they have no other choice, and/or are ignorant.)

I'd suggest using a good search engine "advice on renting first apartment" etc ... and/or getting & reading some "Tenant/Renter" guide book.

Also... talk to friends, coworkers, etc.

1st/last month means if you're renting for a year you're paying for month #1 and #12 up front. Lets say I wrote you a check for April to pay rent and then come May I decided to leave, that "last month" pays for the month of May.

Security deposit varies in cost. What it does is it covers any damages you might cause. One thing I would suggest before moving in is recording the whole place and taking pictures while pointing out any flaws you might see and then upload and save them. Then after you're done moving out you do the same exact thing. You basically now have evidence of the place before you moved in and after. This will save you from paying for damages that the landlord could've easily made up.

Another common one is prorating which is if you're moving into a place in the middle of the month prorating means you're paying for the rest of the month. So if rent was $1000 and you move in halfway into the month then you're paying $500 for the first month and then $1000 after.
