I've always been of the opinion that Valentine's Day is much worse than other consumerism tainted holidays. Valentine's Day gifts are never practical but expensive and they aren't thoughtful because everyone gets the same few things.
The conclusion I've reached about it is it's to idolize the wife or girlfriend through resource sacrifice, just like how more religious populations slaughter lambs to god or let food rot at the base of their god's statue.
