No joke. Medieval cathedrals actually feel like holy places due to how beautiful they are. They make modern churches look like dumps. Even simpler basilicas and the like.

Trier is probably my favorite place in Germany to visit. The juxtaposition of all the medieval and modern European architecture with the Roman stuff. It is pretty far away from Kempten though IIRC.

was born and raised catholic, but was always as religiously neutral as they come. but a few years ago i did the backpacking thing through europe and really enjoyed visiting numerous churches. touring the vatican was one of the best travel experiences ever.
