This is what "marriage" used to be about.

Even before it technically required a "license"... there was a societal expectation of it -- and most notably those who had children OUTSIDE of a marriage, were not "celebrated" (as we now do), but were roundly shamed & shunned for it.

That wasn't primarily done as "punishment"... but rather as a "deterrent."
