You can get a job with only JavaScript and knowing some frameworks. I’d recommend learning Node.js and MongoDB when you have at least somewhat decent knowledge in JavaScript.

Other languages, there is PHP which may not be a very good choice, but it’s fairly easy and very good for freelancers. The job circle is also somewhat big. Good PHP developers are very welcome, but you must know Symfony framework or Laravel.

You don’t have to sit at a desk you can buy a standing one, take breaks or exercise every two hours or whenever you feel like.

I guarantee you that every other job is the same. You have to sit at a desk or you can do physical work, but you’ll be tired by the end of the shift. You choose where you sit.

Don’t use Codecademy or sites like that. Watch YouTube videos instead and apply the principles. Understand the core concepts of programming. What’s more important understand why we do things rather than what we do. Read documentations and experiment yourself. Try to solve problems yourself that’s how you grow as a programmer.

Javascript is fine, there are a billion tutorials on the web, well documented, and although there are some browser specific issues, outside of that it's "easy", and has a gazillion support libraries to do just about anything you want.

Python is another useful/free one, that can get you started as well as having a billion tutorial sites and support libraries to do whatever you want.

What do I do with my coding skills? Whatever I want. I always need a new utility or web scraper for something, or database work. Although these days I mostly just do AI coding challenges out of boredom.

How useful? It gives you power. There's nothing like solving a problem or automating something through your own power. Like building your own house, or car or something.

Im learning javascript.

I am torn on if this is good or bad. Javascript is a very popular (today) lang, it is in demand, but for a beginner it can be hard the event drive, and async execution of it can be harder for beginners to get than say a php or python.

However if you start with php or python you may find it in some way to move to javascript as well even though both of them are someone easier to learn and get the basics of

I always found the best way for me to learn anything was to solve problems for myself using the skills. I would read a couple books or watch a few videos on the subject to get me the basics but then I would learn by doing.

Pick something anything that you want to do with Javascript and find away to do it, small bit size things are best then build from there.

Pluralsight is a good site to learn to code. JavaScript, SQL, C#, HTML are are pretty universal coding skills. Beyond that, there's C++, Python, Haskell, etc., but I'd say C#, JS, and SQL are really good ones to start with.

YouTube has good coding videos, especially for beginners. I'd say start there first and see what interests you.

If you are going to start with Javascript, I'd highly recommend starting with the right foot and watching some Douglas Crockford videos on the language. He has some nice ideas about "disciplining" your code that will make it better and more readable.

In my opinion, Visual Basic is a good "first language".

Not because it is the easiest, but because, if you work in a standard office job, you probably use Excel everyday so you can put what you learn into practice immediately and see tangible benefits for it.

Odds are, youre not ready to make a careet switch into programming yet. So automating some of your day-to-day tasks by programming macros will benefit your current job performance whilst learning your new skill on the side and it's a skill that easily transferable, regardless of your future career plans (I've never seen a job advert that doesn't list "fluent in excel" as a requirement).

While you're learning, you're immediately putting it to use and seeing the practicality of your knowledge, which motivates you to learn more.

I used to program in college (Java/C++) and sometimes you'd learn something, or build a program and think "yeah, this is cool, but when would you ever use something like this in the real world?" - I found this very demotivating, and as such, I never stuck it out long enough to get to the really cool stuff. VBA has kept me interested thanks to the instant gratification of knowing that new function I learned can save me an hour of pointless admin each week (which gives me more time to make sales calls and earn than sweet comish)

about a year ago i started learning c++ and im now developing gameon my own in SDL2 i dont know anything about javascript but all i can say is that when learning a language is that dedication is very important.

in the last year i learned very slowly cause im still in school and other things. i sometimes wouldnt spend a week on programming. but you have to keep learning and keep yourself coming back to it.

Like others here, I have been programming since the late 70s. For practical immediate purposes, Javascript and Python are good. For your long term growth I would recommend getting familiar with a variety of languages: assembly, COBOL, LISP, FORTRAN, UNIX shell, FORTH. They all work in different ways and force you to change the way you approach problems. Do that over a period of decades and you will be a programmer, not just a coder.

Hey u/onemanfortress, I've been programming for about 5 years and running a dev shop for about 10. If I can give you any advice is that programming is just like any other language, you have to use it all the time or else you forget; so do it every day.

First, You DO NOT SUCK AT CODING. You're just inexperienced.

Second, Javascript is a great language to learn. I've found Udemy is a great place to start. I've found them to have more comprehensive tutorials but that's just my opinion. In fact, I'm going back through THIS one because it covers all of the basics and doesnt rely on any frameworks. After you feel great about the basics, then you can move on to frameworks like React and React Native. If you learn React Native, its not unheard of to start out charging $75/hr and then "onward and upward".

Learning JS puts you in a position to build some great web apps and mobile apps, if that's your goals.

If you can see yourself doing more data science or DevOps (Development operations: If JS and PHP are the ones building the apps, DevOps is architecture for how those apps are deployed, and secured) then Python is the way to go.

Third, KEEP FUCKING PROGRAMMING BRO! I fucking LOOOOVE seeing people get in to tech. For years I didnt think I was smart enough and finally I just said "ya know what, fuck it. I can do this" so you can too. If the goal is to learn how to build app, find a couple sites/apps you like and start building some replicas. There are so many tutorials out there that say "we're gonna build a reddit clone", and eventually you'll get sick of them but for now, do it. Build a reddit clone, a facebook clone... anything. Building those apps will help you put together a good Github account which is what people like me actually hire off of.

PS: Some people shit on PHP but it's got it's uses. There's a new(ish) framework out there called Laravel and it makes building the backend of an app really easy, but that's down the line. You can check out the site LaraCasts which has some great PHP beginner -> advanced courses and also how you can couple it to React Apps, its legit.

Ok, I think i'm done preaching now. Fuck I get so excited about people getting in to tech.
