I read her biography. She was actually, by all accounts, smart and hardworking. She was an outstanding officer candidate. She could have had a great career in the Navy in any number of fields. She wanted to be an aviator, and that's fine. The Navy flies big Boeing planes, small jets (like private business jets), King Air planes, helicopters, fighter jets ... all used for patrol, cargo, fueling, training, combat, search and rescue, and other things.

That's a big menu. Countless amazing choices for a young Ensign. She could do anything -- except fighter jets. So that's exactly what she decided to fly. On one hand, it's a set-up for a wonderful success story (proving you're good enough to be the first at something).

She was a good pilot. At least, good enough to fly EA-6B Prowlers. It's a small electronic warfare and attack jet. Not exactly a fighter jet, but pretty damn close, and a remarkable accomplishment for any naval aviator.

Anyway, in her ~~auto~~biography, she was quoted as being unhappy flying Prowlers because -- and I am not making this up -- "they aren't pointy." To her, it was like driving a Lexus instead of a Ferrari. One is great, but the other is SUPREME. She was insulted that she wasn't put on track to fly F/A-18s. To her, they were pointy enough. And F/A-18 slots were hard to get. She thought she was good enough to get one.

Again, up until now, it's all fine. She's free to prove her value.

Right around that time, President Clinton lifted the ban on female fighter pilots. The Navy and Air Force raced to see who could produce the first female fighter pilot. In many ways, it was a perfect storm. Kara Hultgreen was putting pressure on the Navy from below, and Clinton putting pressure from above.

Even when she was selected for F-14 training, she felt insulted again, feeling that she deserved F/A-18 training.

I think she was killed by political correctness as well as her ego.

Russia and China have female pilots as well, so I guess next time they'll have bitch-fight instead of dogfight, and male pilots will just be flying their own way.
