I would start with the truth. Tell him the truth and make sure that he understands that the truth is important. Dont lie to him about santa clause and other foolish nonsense. Make him know that he is just a character that represents the day and that certain religions see him as a Saint in their beliefs. Than if he asks about those explain them too. Things like this will set him up for later when it is time to understand more truths of the world.
