Yeah, that's nice. I plan to work my way up from legacy 8 bit MCUs before I get into the 32 bit ones. Can't know where you're going if you don't know where you've been kind of thing. I started off programming them in assembly because I wanted to get familiar with using the registers. I then switched over to C, which actually makes writing to the registers even easier. Once I start using the MLA libraries with the PIC24 series, the library functions will probably handle all the registers for me when setting up different peripherals. I'm sure that is the way it is using arduino, though I've never used the arduino IDE, PICs use microchip's MPLAB X IDE and XC compilers.

Right now, it's not a big deal to work with the registers directly to implement the timers for PWM, SPI, and such as there is a ton of example code out there for the midrange 8 bit PICs. I'm going to try to get USB working with these old 8 bit PICs with one of those FTDI chips that handles all of the USB interfacing for you. Later on, I'll try to implement it with the on chip USB capabilities that the PIC24 offers.

I have a few things in mind that I'd eventually like to make with microcontrollers. I'm going to make a wire bending machine, like this one, though, not using arduino like he does. https://www.instructables.com/id/DIWire-Bender/
