Last game I played was Far Cry 5. Kinda sucked. Before that Shadow of War. I'm hoping to make some room for Dad of Boi (GoW4) but no idea when I'll get to it.
Also waiting for Sekiro as I'm a huge souls fan.

Got a PS3 or an absurdly powerful PC (emulator) ? Then yeah as the games build upon one another. Not to mention Demon's has a lot of things unique to it. Otherwise just start with Dark Souls 1.

You can find it for cheap then. It also had a greatest hits/platinum release. I personally recommend it for the Tower of Latria and Astraea alone.

Oh I already own the game, as well as Dark Souls 1 and 2. Just not sure where to start when I eventually get to the series (I have a large gaming backlog because I buy lots of games on sale). Thanks for the info; I'm definitely going to start with Demon's Souls now (I thought maybe it was rendered obsolete by Dark Souls).
Any class recommendations? I usually like mage class but I dunno if there is even a mage in the DS games or if it's viable. Only footage I have ever seen of the DS games is melee characters.
Souls combat has always been more deep on the melee side. But you can certainly play as a mage in Demon's. None of the games can be said to have "obsoleted" the other per se. Demon's Souls has mechanics unique to it, as do DS1, 2 & 3. Bloodborne has its own mechanics as well. Worst case there's fewer an invasion or other people to play with in the older games.

Just jumping into this because I’m someone who really loves the souls series.
Demons souls is technically the first souls game but is completely detached from the other games (apart from a very few throwbacks and nods). The story from DeS ends with DeS.
Dark souls 1 is where I would start. I would say the majority of Souls fans agree that 1 was the best of the 3. It has the beginning of the dark souls storyline (and the majority of it, honestly). Dark souls 2 is generally agreed to be the worst (I don’t necessarily agree) because it was co-developed by a different set of guys and the gameplay is way different. DaS 2’s story has almost nothing to do with DaS 1 apart from a few throwbacks and nods as well.
DaS 3 follows DaS 1’s story more than the other games and is also another OK place to start.
You don’t really need to play them in order. Demons souls is going to feel very dated and clunky, DaS 1 might even feel the same.
