I'm so sorry to hear you're Canadian. From what I understand it can be a very depressing and lonely life for you. You have my sympathies.

It's northern hemisphere, and the peak times will be the december / jan for optimal weather, unfortunately that's also when all the tourists go, so really any fall to spring time period should work. Unless you like being around peak tourist season, so whenever is good for you.

The interiors of the pyramids and such are cooler, or at least, I didn't find it to be a problem. It'll still be warm, but it won't be burning hot outside. Make sure you have sunblock and a hat.

Get ready to be hassled a lot. Don’t buy any souvenirs for a few days until you get an idea of what you want.

Don’t follow anybody to a “papyrus museum”. They’re rip-off joints and you may end up getting robbed. You WILL be accosted by people frequently trying to sell you something. Ignore them.

One of the most amazing days of my life I spent in Alexandria. It is gorgeous.

I’d recommend hiring an official guide to the pyramids and Sphinx. They can guide you past the touts and thieves and give some real insights into the place. I rode a horse around the pyramids which was awesome.

The Sphinx was spectacular of course.

I arranged the night before to go early out to the Red Pyramid. I struck a deal with a local cabbie. I got there right after dawn. There’s several pyramids in a row. I scrambled to the top of a small one and sat there looking out over the Sahara. Sitting alone on top of a Pyramid is seriously one of the highlights of my life so far.

Later I climbed down into the Red Pyramid. I was the only tourist there. I sat in the mummy’s crypt by myself for an hour. If you go the echo is otherworldly!

Cairo is amazing and overwhelming. Definitely worth a visit. Go to the Citadel downtown as well. The old market is one of the coolest places I’ve ever seen.

Go for a walk along the Nile. Just be aware that it is a huge city with a lot of poverty and violence.

I had a great time there overall even though there were some negative aspects to it.

Don’t buy any “antiques” since they are all of recent fabrication. Check your souvenirs to see if they were made in China.

I have been, many years ago. If you're white you will get hassled by people selling things like you won't believe. Here is a tip, say no thank you in Arabic and it works best. Also, bring a Camelback. Staying hydrated is key, and don't drink anything but bottled water. Another tip is never take a cab that is standing, flag down one that is driving.

Grab a good solid sun hat.

Also pick up a neck cooler, soak it in ice water before departing.

I've been there, though it was many years ago. Definitely see the pyramids and the sphinx. I had no idea they are literally a couple hundred yards from the city. IIRC there's a tunnel you can take up into one of the pyramids, but it's claustrophobic if you're susceptible to that. They have a great hammy sound and light show which is fun.

If you like haggling for stuff, check out Khan el-Khalili.

Probably the best thing I saw was the Cairo Museum. It's like the Smithsonian of Egypt. Also if you have time they have Nile boat tours which we didn't have time to do. There's more to see than Cairo.

Best advice to keep cool in that dry climate is wear a thin cotton shirt and hat, and douse with water during the day.
