I guess it depends on where you are. In north Texas, a starter home is around $100000 to $150000, 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, 1 or 2 car garage, small yard. Generally for newly weds, no kids (yet), or maybe 1 or 2 young kids. After about 10 years, you are definitely thinking about moving up. The prices can be horrifically higher in other parts of the country.

I have a 900 sq ft 3 bedroom Rancher, 2 bath, and huge deck in Maryland. Cost me 220k. I bought it to live in forever, or until I'm ready to start van dwelling after I retire.

My parents have moved 3 times. My dad always laments that if they would have stayed in their first house it would have been paid off years ago. I learned from their mistakes.

I've brought over a handful of dates who always comments that it's a great starter house. I'm like what?? I'm living here forever. Fuck buying a house again. The whole process is a nightmare.

You have to look at resale also. Three bedroom, 2 if not 2.5 baths and yes a garage. You buy too small that tosses out a large group of home buyers down the road.

I have a 3br 2.5 bath two car garage and a tiny yard. Front and back with an electric plug in mower, string trimmer and weed killer is a less than a 30 minute job. The house was built in 1960, 1658 sqft and the original owners raised two kids in the house, now it's just me and the cat.

I bought it right near the bottom of the RE implosion in the spring of 2011 for 117K. There are 900 sqft houses in my neighborhood going for 170K six years later.
