Work NEVER ends mate. That's the thing, busting your ass is pointless unless it's for a project or something that needs to be done on a deadline. Just do your job and go home. Don't go out of your way for anyone. If you do, everyone will start using you.

There's a balance to be found, here. You can perform well at your job, but also keep your options open elsewhere to ensure you actually have bargaining power.

Even if you find a decent company.. Working just to benefit yourself is a good additude.. Do your job well.. Dont get involved in drama... socialize only when necessary .. Dont stick out Dont dox yourself Be forgetable

IMO bonuses are rarely worth it.

If I were the top person in a group of 20-30 I'd probably get an extra 10% of my annual salary as a bonus. It isn't an insignificant amount of money, but you have to consider what it takes to get it, and the amount of luck involved as well. If everything goes great for you and the politics align and all that, then you get an extra 10%. If not quite everything comes together then you get a pat on the back and an extra 3%. If you just phone it in you get the normal amount.

I do reasonably good work, but I have zero interest in killing myself to try to be in the running for those top awards. Plus if you do that you start accumulating all kinds of side duties. I see people working weekends and evenings left and right. They probably still don't get the extra 10% consistently. Meanwhile I get my evenings and weekends off for the most part.

Also, if you end up putting in an extra 20% of your hours to get an extra 10% in pay, who is getting the better end of the deal?

I'm saving my money left and right. The net result of all of that "slacking" is that I'll probably have to end my career a few months later. Big deal...

i'm 56yo and it took me into my 40's to learn that simple lesson.

When I'm at work, I do the best that I can, every minute that I'm there. And then I leave and I don't think about it again until the next morning. I'm in IT, so there is some overlap, but I'll be damned if I give up nights and weekends again like I routinely did in my 20's and 30's.

Since I came to that simple realization, I'm a lot happier, enjoy my life more, and have never had an issue with not staying late, working weekends, whatever, at work. Good for you.

I cover extra shifts... but I'm an hourly employee, and do it for the (OT) money, which I use to ensure I'll never have to be a company man.

It takes a while to learn this lesson . I was determined to be a company man in my early career, especially because I loved working with my coworkers at my first few jobs. Then poor management usually lead to me and my friends being emotionlessly laid off .

After that it became obvious to see no matter how hard I worked or how much I enjoyed my company I as always expendable but it also is refreshing it reminds me that opportunities are always out there if you take them .

I'm all for being a team player but one thing I've learned for the veterans I've worked with killing yourself for the business almost never amounts to anything unless you are in an ownership position and I mean actual ownership , I've been a part of several " Revenue sharing, get stock options for our future Megacorp " situations and that idea is the easiest way to milk people for all they're worth .

The truth is good successful businesses require hard work but that work also has benefits and equal investment across the board , it's a team effort to make things successful , If YOU are the one working hard to make the entire company successful then most likely you are the useful sucker the company is pinning its success on which is the wrong mindset for success and value in the firs place.

Better to learn this lesson earlier, one of my favorite coworkers stated " I'm a mercenary , I work for whoever bids highest" and while I personally have other factors I find valuable as well that is a key mindset I've had to adopt . If someone isn't paying me in the time , respect, or actual real dollars I want and I am as talented as I think I am then someone else out there will give me what I want.

I've been doing the following thing for several years now: when it comes to work for some companies, I'm only going the extra mile during the hiring process, especially the interview and that's it.

I know they don't give a shit about me, why should I give a shit about them? Now don't get me wrong, I arrive on time and I do my job but I work for a living, I don't live to work...

I bust my butt for the first year or two when I first start a new job to make a name for myself to get past any probation period. After that, I slowly move into coast mode, where I slow down my production to point that eventually I reach a point where I do the bare minimum I need to maintain a certain level of performance to meet the metrics. 10 years in my current job and doing well not killing myself or really giving a shit.

I learned the same thing the hard way. They completely skipped my review the same year I busted my ass and made them a ton of money. The review is 2 parts, you put together a presentation on what you did and all that. I put a lot of time into it and worked all year on it. 2nd part of review they give you their take and a raise. I brought my program up from 100k a month to over a million a month. I had to harass a few executives and VPs to give it to me, and then when I eventually got it 3 months late they told me no raise. My productivity dropped through the floor.
