My grandmother is vising from overseas. Last time she was here was over 10 years ago.
Last night we took her out to show her around and we ended up in a pretty popular restaurant in NYC that part of it is a bar and even a small dancing area (real small).
To me everything seems normal, I don't really look around much. But grandma is looking at everything and everyone, she is enjoying herself and that's the point.
Half way though dinner she turns to us and asks, "Is this a gay restaurant?"
All of us are shocked and start laughing, my sister asks her "why would you say that? It's a regular restaurant and bar that welcomes everyone.
She says "ask the waiter, you will see i'm right!"
We all start looking around to see if there is a sign or something that made her come to this interesting conclusion, however, there are no signs.
I ask her, "grandma, why would you think that this is a gay restaurant".
She replies, "Why else would all the men and women be so separated?"
We all look around and she's right! The bar area is full of men and women but both are completely separated.
The men are standing in groups talking and laughing, the women are standing in groups all looking at their phones, taking selfies playing with their hair and checking out the men.
I told my grandma that it's just a style right now.
My guess is that in the coming months more and more people will notice this trend of men going their own way everywhere, be it in their personal lives or when out in random places.
You will always have the men looking to mess their lives up, but those are rarely the men non drugged up women are interested in.
As dinner comes to an end, the waiter shows up to see if we want any coffee. My sister says she will have some, my grandma replies "MeToo". As a joke I tell the waiter "my grandmother means me too as in she will have some coffee and not #MeToo".
