Reminds me of an episode from house, and an experience I had once with a girl.

So in the episode of house there was a guy who was divorced who was seeing some young "hot thang" when he was diagnosed with cancer. In steps the valiant ex wife who is mature and worldly and capable of seeing him through his treatment.

They have conversations about why he's seeing such a young woman and there's tension about him getting back together with his ex. It seems like that will happen until he's cured.

When he's cured, he turns away from his ex wife and daughter and goes back to the young girl. One of the doctors, I think Wilson, asks him why, he says something, paraphrasing, "I guess the person you want when you're dying isn't the same as the person you want when you're living."

Of course, I think the genders of this show were reversed, but it is sort of human nature in general, and something I found to be quite profound. Women are much more capable of branch swinging than this.
