I think I know what you're getting at. Yeah movies back then were better because they didn't have any obvious socio political agenda ingrained in them.

And, well, you were a kid, so you had little to worry about.

You can still experience kid like happiness though. You just have to eat right, exercise, avoid toxic food. Avoid toxic people. Have a positive mentality. Forgive and forget. Let go of things you usually use to hang on to.

I miss all of that shit too. It almost seems like there's this massive rift in our generation after 9/11, like everything diverged from there and our childhood was interrupted. It's most likely like that for other generations that came before us as well when it comes to national tragedies or war. The Cold War winding down and the fall of the wall was the defining moment for the previous generation. Vietnam for the generation before that. Then WWII/Korea for the generation before that. So on and so forth. Of course it varies, some people were very much effected by other things, like Columbine or Waco and what-not.

But yeah, speaking personally, I had to grow up fast. My parents got divorced in 1999 and I started working in 2006 at the age of 11. Worked manual labor and blue-collar since I was young, got paid under the table since you know, labor laws. Turned 18 and had a series of blue collar warehouse and factory jobs, couple fast food jobs, some retail. Was homeless quite a few times and always doing without, got wrapped up in drugs and alcohol quite a few times. First smoked pot at 12, smoked my first cigarette at 8, drank the first time at 14 and also took acid for the first time that same year. Discovered heroin and cocaine when I was 16. Yeah, I dunno, I tell people I didn't really have a childhood and I think I'm not far off the mark. I don't think my story is unique. Same shit happened to a lot of us and we had to mature fast to meet the challenges we faced.

I miss the peak Cartoon Network. Back when they still had real fucking cartoons, still showed Hanna-Barbera stuff, Adult Swim just started and I'd stay up really late to watch it and end up falling asleep at my desk in school the next day. Video games and movies weren't pure propaganda and pandering, they still tackled challenging concepts. Music was kind of going down the shitter back then too but you could find some good shit easily. I don't know, in all honesty it's probably the rose-tinted glasses effect and we shouldn't take it all so seriously, but shit really did seem better back then.

Look at Einstein. A mind that grappled with the complexity of reality, but simultaneously stuck out his tongue at paparazzi, and famously was very cordial and kind to laymen that spoke to him.

I think the mindset of the "virtuous child," would be something like: 1) Full presence of mind in the current activity you're in 2) Unchained curiosity 3) Total removal of faith in all preconceived prejudices

4) of course, virtue in Philosopher Plato's sense

1982 here. Last week I took two rest days from working out to watch some old classics. I think it went Stargate/Event Horizon/Terminator 2/The Black Cauldron

It was a great decision BTW :) much popcorn was had, and a couple of brews.

1985 here! Love the 90's and early 00. Music was great, gaming was great (starcraft/diablo 2/c&c/counterstrike). I miss my childhood.

Get a hobby and archive something!

I build a patio. With not much experience. But with ideas of how to do stuff where the experienced guys said "It's easier if you..." or "One doesn't do it like this but....". With details where other people just said "Why?" or "Yeah, right"

It took 4 months of work together with my father in law. We had a big fight early on (see quotes above) but in the end it got build as I wanted. And the evening when it was done was just.... WOW! I was smiling from one ear to the other for hours. And even now, 3 years later I am regulary sitting on my patio being as I wanted and I am still happy!

You don't need to build a patio but get a hobby and archive something! Get your blue belt in karate or judo, learn an instrument and finally play you favorite song without mistakes. The step when a doing a hard thing leaves your brain and enter your spinal cord which makes it easy and enjoyable is VERY sastifying! Or teach children something (not yours!), see how they develop and get better and enjoy it and look up to you.
