I worked for a company which had offices in Russia. It was the late 90's when this was new. I wasn't looking. The whole thing seemed as stupid as online dating, which was also new. Since I had Russian coworkers I was able to ask and get a lot of candid answers. They told me it was a total scam. I can't tell you how many horror stories I've heard and read since those days to now. Gentlemen never, never ever!

A acquaintance of mine divorced twice got himself a Ukrainian bride about fifteen years ago. She's nice and very pretty and came with a daughter. He almost lost her when he started drinking and ignoring her. She walked out and within a week he was on his knees begging her forgiveness and wanting her to come back home. He was terrified of having to date an American woman if she left him. Those are his words not mine. He hasn't stepped out of line since.

My brother has a friend that was married three times and thought that he just wasn't cut out for marriage. Right after the wall came down someone got him a paper catalog of Russian women wanting to be pen pals or something along those lines.

He saw one from the Ukraine that interested him and he started writing her, and after a year or so he went over to visit. He eventually went back, married her and brought her back to the U.S.. He's been happily married since the mid nineties according to my brother.

We had some guy here in town last year that was in his sixties that went over and got himself a Ukrainian bride in her 20's. She tried to take him for everything he had, instead she ended up having the FBI and Justice Department all over her ass. She's fled back to the Russian Federation to avoid prosecution. She even had some fake lawyer write up an official looking document that required that he had to pay her alimony for life. We don't have Alimony in this state. She got nothing for her troubles.
