A couple of years ago I had a light bulb moment. So many women color their hair to cover the gray. Many resent the effort and expense, and it’s a major way in which we make ourselves invisible as older women.

And I'm sure it's a man's fault.

. “You go first,” was one notable comment, so I did, bleaching my whole head. (I keep part of it white, partly as an age-solidarity dye job and partly because I figure no one believes the brown is real.)

You go first. Next, you'll pay for everything on your own from birth to death without draining someone else of resources.

One thing we can all agree on, though? Aging is harder for women.

Why? You outlive men (mostly because you don't work hard), so why is it harder?

We splurge on anti-aging products. We fudge or lie about our age. We diet, we exercise, we get plumped and lifted and tucked.

Well you are stupid. But diet and exercise is a pretty good thing to do during all phases of your life.

And why would you do these things to compete with younger women? I mean, are these younger women having an easier time extracting unearned resources than you?

No judgment, I swear. But trying to pass for younger is like a gay person trying to pass for straight or a person of color for white.

That's homophobic. Black people have a hard time passing for white, although white people can be head of local NAACP offices I'm told so they can pass for black, which seems asymmetrical?

But gay people passing for straight? That sounds pretty easy. Do you assume all gay people shoot rainbows out of their ass and lisp genetically?

These behaviors are rooted in shame over something that shouldn’t be shameful.

No one is shaming you. You're upset that men in your age group don't want to give you money, and if they are going to give money, it'll be for younger, hotter, women. Don't you remember who you dated when you were 19? Was he older or younger?

Besides, you're a feminist, shouldn't your income be pretty high right now?

When women compete to “stay young,” we collude in our own ~~disempowerment~~ stupidity. Stop doing stupid things and see how your life improves.

It pits us against one another.

Blame men? Because "one another" sounds like a woman problem.

Look as ugly and old as you want. Why do you care?

Because the poorest and shittiest places on earth are generally places that are colorful unfortunately. You got your Caribbean islands, war torn Africa, etc.

Every organism on Earth grows old. You cannot use this one as a form of oppression. Go join the AARP and whine to them.

Your "oppression" is that you aren't getting attention and money for your gender. That's what you're upset about.

TAP INTO WHAT WE KNOW: GETTING OLDER ENRICHES US

Well, after the divorce if the kids are still young enough to get child support certainly.

Priorities are clearer. It’s easier to manage emotions. We want less. We care less about what people think, which is really liberating.

If you care less, then why were you putting all your shit on you face so you'd age quicker?

Instead of muttering “What the hell happened?” at the face in the mirror, how about taking a minute to recall some of the things that did happen, and how remarkable a lot of them were?

STDs? Alcohol? Smoke filled clubs? Cheap makeup slathered all over? That's what happened.

Not the prettiest or the thinnest or the youngest, but the ones who know their lovers are lucky.

You mean those that put out. I'm pretty sure the ones getting laid aren't saying "Chad, you sure are lucky to have my wrinkled ass."

Well you hit the wall, then look for a moron to divorce in a few years and ride those checks for 20 years. So 20 years + 20 years = 40, when you start aging and the gravy train runs out.

Why do we buy into the notion that our so-called prime evaporates along with our reproductive usefulness — if not before — despite all the evidence to the contrary?

Because no one cares what you think about it, when your body falls apart, why do men have to fuck babies into you and pay your lazy saggy ass? Aren't you empowered? Go adopt some babies and pay for them yourself. But it really isn't about that is it? It's just about money.

Having friends of all ages makes it easier to step off the hamster wheel of age denial, share power, and think and act in pro-aging ways.

We can turn it from a conversation about scarcity and loss to one about empowerment and equity.

Knock yourself out. We certainly don't care. But we know you won't, because, in the end, you'll keep competing for betabux or get cats. I'd recommend the latter. Stop screwing men due to your poor life choices.

The women’s movement taught us to claim our power; a pro-aging movement will teach us to hold onto it.
