This is so dumb. There is a transgender academic counselor (of all things) at my school, and one time I didn't know where the other counselor's room was so they helped me out. I always say "man" or "bro" or some pronoun like that after thanking another guy to make it more personal. I said "Thanks man" and walked away not knowing if it was the right answer. Lol.

Sounds pretty stupid, but I've got two questions, if anyone here might have an answer:

Why is this specific to nursing homes? Direct address is used everywhere.
Don't the trans-people or multi-gender or genderless or whatever say "you" when they're talking to someone? If they're talking about someone, then that someone likely isn't even there to hear it, so what do they care?
