protagonist that is evil solely because he's rich, surrounded by people who are good solely because they're poor

well, that is the point. I know personally people who always complain that they do not have money, but they are very greedy and they would spend all money they got on useless consumerist crap which they do not need. if someone with more money gives his money to those people he will not help them at all because they will learn nothing about value of money if money comes to them "from nowhere". in fact I also was in bad financial situation few years ago and one rich man, who was a friend of my family, wanted to borrow me money to help me financially, but I refused his help since I did not wanted to own him something. instead, I tried to improve my finances by myself and I succeeded. now I can describe my financial situation as good and it going better every year - and it is mostly because I have personal financial discipline and I do not buy things which I do not really need.

Also, I am not proposing that we should really burn our money before we die. Instead we can invest it in some project useful to humanity, such is colonization of Mars or something similar.

However, if I would have to choose either to burn my money or to leave it to some of my cousins who would probably spend all of it on sea vacations I would certainly choose the first option.
