It's happened before (decline of fertility) but we can't legitimately assert it correlated with gender equality as we wouldn't have any data for that. One factor that does correlate is urbanization, traditional towns and cities pre the modern era had declining populations and required people migrating to them to remain stable.

I don't like the statistics I'm seeing in regards to western fertility as we are only avoiding dire conquences through mass migration which has it's own drawbacks. I just think we should jump to conclusions and the root cause. Even if we were to say ban abortion which would bring the fertility rate up to stable it would only provide a temporary spike as people are likely to adjust there behavior.

I will say the push for the career woman has definitely impacted fertility rate but it won't necessarily be the dominant factor. We need a solution or our civilization and way of life will be gone in a few generations.

As an economist, this is not surprising and we do find a rational explanation for this correlation. Decision theory tells us that the opportunity cost for kids (usually the forgone salary) for a jobless women is much lower than for a woman in the work force. Also unequal countries are usually less developed and children cost less as a function of total household income.

In fact, even elementary growth models like Solow-Swan predict long term absolute GDP collapse if the growth rate of the capital and residue does not compensate for a negative growth rate of the population. Indeed, I once proposed an extension to this admittedly elementary model that describes the growth rate of the population as a function of the other rates, so for example things like increasing participation of women in the workforce actually become negatively associated with long term GDP growth, due to the shifts in their opportunity costs even in this simple model.

Of course, I believe in strict equality and that women should obviously not be kept from the workforce if they want to join. I'm just glad this impossible dilemma occurred late enough in our stage as a species when we will have the technology to solve it if we want to without hurting either male or female liberties.
