If you work for yahoo, google, Nike, or one of the big guys, it will be toxic. If you work for a smaller business, 200 employees or less, they are gonna think in terms of practicality and they usually care more about your productivity.

When you are looking for your first job, you might have a harder time to find one so take what you can get.

But the career pays well and if you are mistreated there are 18 other jobs waiting to hire you. So I think it is great.

I've found it to be very lucrative and rewarding. I've completely automated my job, and they could fire me tomorrow.

Of course, I haven't mentioned to anyone that I automated it.

But that's the joy of being a professional problem solver.

I haven't noticed it toxic at all. Sure, a lot of smart STEM people have an elitist attitude, and can be superior feeling at times. There's a lot of competition, much like you see at MIT where it's all trying to show how easy everything is and no one has to study because everyone's just such a fucking genius.

You see that a lot with people trying to prove how smart they are. After awhile that dies down, and its not abnormal to shit test the new person to make sure they're worthy.

That's just standard social dynamics among nerds. Instead of lifting at the gym, you are showing how superior you are to one another.

Then after awhile no one gives a shit because everyone fucks up eventually.

Oh, don't think there are few women in software development. Companies have mandated quotas to hire them now, and my experience working with women has been miserable: Insecure, they hide information from you, play disgusting mind games and work from home anytime they please. If you're ever in a position where you're new and a bitch is tasked with explaining anything to you, you're fucked. If I could do it all over, I'd be a plumber, not kidding.

It's blue pilled as fuck in web dev shops, I don't know about other fields of CS. Consider putting up with this part of your job description.

Sounds to me like you really DON'T have a "passion" or "drive" for developing software...

Rather that you want into it -- and obtained "acceptable" grades (i.e. mediocre ones) in the various classes -- primarily because you believe it to be a highly lucrative field.

But -- outside of your schooling, your degree and a few banal school "projects" -- you really don't have anything for a portfolio of your "work."

As to the interviewer's questions, your apparent inability to answer them, and your perception of the whole thing as demonstrating his "arrogance and condescension" -- well quite frankly we just don't have enough data to know WHAT really happened.

But I will say that your complaint... rhymes with the EXACT kind of "whine" that I would expect from a candidate that really doesn't know their proverbial ass from a hole in the ground -- and is all butthurt about the fact that the interviewer was able to "suss that out" in fairly short order.

Add in your whine about "stupid overly detailed questions" -- well IMHO just in that you're demonstrating that the entire field is NOT your "cup of tea" -- because it's often all about "stupid overly detailed things."
