That's why it's always been of utmost importance to me to find a job or a career that I enjoy. If I hate the work, I won't do it. I don't care how much money it pays. I look at jobs like this. You're trading time already, which is the most limited resource a man has. If you're lucky, you have 80 years on this planet. Maybe ten more if you have great genetics. Why waste 50 or so of those years doing something you hate? If you work a job you hate, not only do you sacrifice a lot of time, you also sacrifice your peace of mind. Oftentimes you sacrifice your body too, your health. Then you end up with fucked up knees, a bad back, bad wrists, bad everything. Worn out. Stress also has a potent effect on the human physiology.

I'll put another Bukowski quote here: "Find what you love and let it kill you."

I have no intentions of retiring. I'll likely go out with nothing, just the way I came in. My only goal is to enjoy life to the fullest and have a full plate of experiences during my time here. Another Bukowski quote: "Live your life so well that Death will tremble to take you." That's my goal.

Early retired here. Yup, I get a lot of sleep. All I do is have fun all the time. I'm not from a wealthy family so when I buy nice stuff I make it count, but I live pretty simply.

Guys my age (still working) want me to envy their leathery, saggy wives and the giant houses they still owe $100K on that she can and will take if she gets bored and I decide to give her the fuck she craves. No thanks.

This is just how it is these days... there isn’t much we can do about it other than change jobs and save money for early retirement. Of course you can have your own business but there’s still the stress of running it.

Unless you have a shit load of money saved up and can afford to do fuck all all day then this is how it is. But even if you have it all chances are you’ll end up bored experimenting with drugs.

as bad as that is - not all men are so lucky. many work 12 hour shifts 5 days or more a week and at graveyard shift only to return to their place of residence they can barely afford with little time to spend with loved ones and by loved ones that could simply mean quality family (parents,siblings,cousins,and etc) and good friends. forget about a family of your own because that's simply not practical in this day and age no matter how much you earn.

If you let yourself go long enough you'd hate everyone and everything, shy away from all public appearances because it's too much work. I've seen the end result of a person left to dwell in the refuses of their apathy towards society. It isn't pretty. You stop grooming your appearance, you stop working out, you eat garbage all day long and disappear further into unreality.

Of course this doesn't mean society doesn't have major problems. It does. Going to work though is far and away the smallest problem it has. At a benefit it keeps you socializing, keeps you on top of your appearance and does you the added favor of reminding you that you need to work harder to get more free time. That duality is super important to happiness.

I saw a report that over 7 million American men between the ages of 24 and 51 have dropped out of the work force with no intention of returning.
